After the age of 30, several processes come together that can contribute to skin aging. For example, cell regeneration slows down, the skin tends to become more dry and the skin’s natural “glow” slowly diminishes. The body’s own production of collagen and elastin also decreases. This in turn leads to a reduction in the skin’s elasticity and support, which means that the skin’s wrinkles cannot simply be smoothed out or plumped up again. So where previously expression lines became invisible again within seconds, they suddenly remain for several minutes or longer. 2. Moisturizing Face Care Products

In order to optimally support the facial skin from the age of 30 and thus prevent the formation of wrinkles, the elasticity of the skin should be increased. To achieve this goal, the natural moisture depots must be replenished. Care products containing the active ingredient urea are suitable for this purpose, for example. As a natural moisturizing factor, urea penetrates deep into the upper layers of the skin and provides intensive and long-lasting moisture. In addition, the skin’s protective barrier is strengthened and the skin is protected against dehydration. In addition, your facial care routine from the age of 30 should include ingredients that your skin can no longer produce itself in sufficient quantities. This includes, for example, hyaluronic acid, an ingredient responsible for storing moisture. Another important part of your skin care routine should be radical scavengers such as vitamins A, C, E, ferulic acid and others. 3. Care from the Inside

Beauty comes from within. This is scientifically proven! Our diet has a significant impact on our skin… It is important to eat a balanced diet with enough fruits and vegetables, because the vitamins/antioxidants contained in them are important for cell regeneration and keeping the skin young. It is absolutely not advisable to smoke cigarettes – smoking is a major cause of skin aging! And besides that, of course, there are many other reasons to quit smoking. Alcohol also has a detrimental effect on the skin and should therefore only be consumed in small quantities.

In addition, it is advisable to eat less foods with a high glycemic index (sugar, wheat, meat, sausage) and few convenience foods or highly processed foods. These foods lead to increased sugar levels in the blood and to the storage of A.G.E.s (= Advanced Glycation Endproducts) in the skin, where they promote signs of aging. Incidentally, A.G.E.s also promote arteriosclerosis in other organs, e.g. in vascular walls, and contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases.

Moderate coffee consumption  is probably without negative consequences for the skin. Although the caffeine contained in coffee causes decreased skin’s blood circulation, the antioxidants contained in coffee are beneficial to the skin’s ability to regenerate. Those who want to consume more antioxidants drink green or black tea.

Especially for sensitive skin, prolonged wearing of the mask can lead to irritation, impurities and redness on the face. But even normal skin sometimes shows irritation, dryness and skin irritation due to the continuous wearing of a mask. Those who suffer from atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea or acne often also experience an increase of symptoms while wearing a mask, but these can be improved with the right treatment.

Why does irritated skin occur under the mask?

As a rule, our facial skin is accustomed to not being covered, which means that there is a lot of air exchange. But what happens when the skin is constantly covered by a face mask? Because we humans speak and breathe at the same time, a lot of moisture forms in the narrow space between the skin and the mouth-nose protection. If we put the mask on for only a few minutes, this moisture can quickly escape, but if we wear the face mask for several hours, moisture builds up. For people with sensitive skin, this process – hyperhydration – can lead to skin irritation. The reason for this is that the horny layer – the outer layer of the skin – softens and the skin barrier is damaged. Based on this, a lack of lipids occurs and the natural moisturizing factors of the skin are no longer able to bind sufficient moisture in the skin. Increased transepidermal water loss occurs, causing the upper layer of the skin to dry out. Dry skin due to the mask is the result.

If you are already prone to dry facial skin, this problem can even be exacerbated by constantly wearing a protective mask. In this article, you will learn basic information about dry skin on the face. Another phenomenon is the appearance of scaling and redness of the skin around the edges of the mask, where the tissue of the mask has close contact with the skin. A frequently seen problem is skin irritation in the area of the elastic bands behind the ears. As a rule, both cases involve mechanical irritation of the skin due to friction of the mask fabric against the skin. This occurs especially with sensitive skin. If the symptoms are very pronounced, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist in order to exclude the rarely occurring contact allergies.

Those who are prone to skin impurities can develop so-called “mask acne” under a mask. In this case, “less is more”, i.e. it is best to avoid make-up and too rich skin care products, never try out too many different products and, if in doubt, consult a dermatologist.

What is the right care for dry skin under the mask?

Because the mouth guard may well become a longer-term part of our everyday life, it is important to give the skin sufficient care and thus prevent the consequences such as dry skin under the mask. So, below we will explain what proper facial care for dry skin under the mouth guard can look like and how you can rebuild the skin protection barrier.

An essential part of the care should be to clean the skin thoroughly in the morning and evening, but with mild products. After drying and before putting on the mask, you should also reach for a light face cream that sufficiently moisturizes and soothes the skin (e.g. with panthenol). Allow the cream to absorb before pulling the clean protective mask over your face. Even if this seems difficult for you, you should avoid using make-up on dry skin areas in the mask area, as make-up can further increase the moisture build-up between the fabric and the skin. As a result, pimples appear, which can even develop into mask acne.

Richer skin care products (e.g. creams or nourishing face masks) should only be applied in the evening, or when you know that you will no longer be putting on a mask. Here it is recommended, for example, to use products with the ingredient urea, because this binds moisture, enriches it in the skin and strengthens the skin’s protective barrier.

What are the everyday tips to prevent dry skin under the mask?

Choose the right mask

Wear a well-fitting mask. It is also best to use different masks to avoid prolonged friction and pressure on the same area. The mask should be changed at least daily to prevent excessive bacterial colonization of the facial skin.

Application of moisturizers or gel

Apply light moisturizers or gel before wearing the mask to reduce friction between the skin and the mask.

Wash face with lukewarm water

Avoid cleaning your face with water that is too hot, so as not to put additional stress on your skin barrier.

Avoid make-up under the mask

If the mask must be worn for several hours a day, do not wear makeup under the mask if possible, just use a light moisturizer.

If you tend to have extremely dry skin, you may notice itching or an uncomfortable feeling of tightness. The most common places to notice dryness on the legs are the knees, shins and ankles.

Causes of dry skin on the legs

But why is your skin prone to dryness on the legs? Dryness is generally a sign that the moisture balance is no longer in balance and the skin lacks moisture. Reasons for this can be genetic predisposition, age or even taking medication. With age, the skin often becomes drier and thinner – this is also referred to as parchment skin. Because the skin in the affected areas is very fine and thin, it can also quickly become sore. In the case of dry skin on the legs, the shin is more frequently affected.  In addition, external factors or mechanical stimuli can also cause dry skin on the legs and have an influence on the moisture balance of your skin. A pair of jeans that is too tight can rub against your top layer of skin, causing increased skin flaking. The friction weakens the skin’s natural barrier, causing it to lose moisture and dry out. Wearing compression stockings for therapy of venous and lymphatic disorders, can also aggravate skin dryness. Small lines and cracks caused by dryness result, making the skin look rough and unhealthy. When skin is dry, the skin’s protective barrier deteriorates, which in turn leads to moisture loss. What are the symptoms of dry skin on the face?

Dry skin is a common problem that can occur not only on the legs or feet, but also on the face. Depending on the severity, dry facial skin can cause roughness and a slight feeling of tightness. Extremely dry skin, on the other hand, is characterized by an extreme feeling of tightness, flaking and severe itching.

Whether you are prone to dry skin also depends on your skin type. For example, people with normal or combination skin struggle with dryness symptoms more often than those whose facial skin is more oily. However, those with more oily skin may also experience redness and flaking, which is misinterpreted as “dry skin.” The so-called seborrheic (oily) scaling usually occurs at the hairline, in the eyebrows and in the area of the nasolabial fold. If you suffer from this type of scaling, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist.  If it is scaling, dryness and tension of the skin in the area of the cheeks, the eye region or on the eyelids, this speaks for the typical dry skin, which usually corresponds to a minimal form of neurodermatitis in the facial area and which you can counteract with an optimal care for dry facial skin.

What are the causes behind dry skin on the face?

There are many reasons for extremely dry skin on the face. Skin diseases such as psoriasis and neurodermatitis can also lead to an altered skin appearance in the face (here you can find more information on dry facial skin due to skin diseases such as neurodermatitis and psoriasis). But dryness in the face can also occur alongside these skin diseases.

Basically, dry skin always occurs when the skin barrier is disturbed, causing increased evaporation of moisture from the skin. The cause of this is, among other things, a lack of the skin’s own moisturizing factors (hydrolipid film), which results in increased transepidermal water loss and thus causes the upper skin layer to dry out. The effect is intensified by a disturbed skin barrier as a result of reduced lipid formation, which significantly increases moisture loss. Dry skin is the result.

What causes the loss of moisture from the skin?

In general, it should be noted that the facial skin is much more sensitive and thinner than other skin areas of the body. At the same time, considering that the face is one of the only areas of the body that remains uncovered and under the influence of the sun, dirt and other factors throughout all seasons, the facial skin has to do an incredible job for us every day. This performance can be affected by internal and external factors.

External factors

In the colder months, we expose our facial skin to both cold outdoor temperatures and dry heating air. These ultimately cause the skin to dry out. Frequent washing, aggressive skin care products and long, hot baths or showers disrupt the skin’s protective film and the facial skin dries out. Direct mechanical stress to the skin, for example by wearing a mouth-nose guard, can also cause dryness (learn more about this topic here). Excessive sun exposure can also have a negative effect on the facial skin. It is therefore advisable to use a day cream with a sun protection factor (SPF) and, in the case of sunscreen, to ensure that it also contains moisture-binding active ingredients in addition to the appropriate SPF.

Internal factors

In order for our skin to protect us from external influences, certain basic conditions must be met. However, these can vary from person to person. Our genes determine skin characteristics such as pigmentation, skin barrier strength, moisture and lipid content. This means that the skin of different people contains different amounts of moisture and lipids under identical conditions.

The most common internal factors that can cause dry skin on the face are genetic predisposition (neurodermatitis tendency), hormones, and a person’s age. If hormone levels change during adolescence or menopause, for example, this can also affect the moisture balance in the skin. During menopause, estrogen levels drop and this usually causes more moisture loss and less sebum and lipid production in the skin – so it becomes drier with age. Age therefore also plays a role when it comes to dry skin on the face The older you get, the more your skin tends to dry out and lose its tone and elasticity. Sometimes psychological stress also worsens skin dryness.

Around the eyes, the skin is even thinner compared to the rest of the face. Because there are also fewer lipid-donating sebaceous glands in this area of the skin, the moisture depot there can decrease more quickly. What to do with cracks on the heels?

What can be the causes of cracks on the heels?

Dry skin on the heels can have many causes. The most common cause is genetic predisposition to dry skin (atopic diseases, e.g. atopic dermatitis, hay fever, asthma, allergies). Further causes are the aging process of the skin and climatic conditions such as dry air in winter. Other reasons can be pressure-related deficiency due to incorrect footwear, standing for long periods of time or wearing of compression stockings. Sometimes diseases such as diabetes or medications (for example, some cancer therapies) are also responsible. If the dryness on the feet intensifies, this can lead, for example, to small cracks on the heels and finally to fissures (so-called rhagades). These can be recognized by deep furrows in the skin where the tissue breaks open. To prevent the cracks on the heels from getting deeper and eventually becoming inflamed, it is important to treat rhagades properly or, even better, to prevent rhagades from forming in good time.

How can you prevent dry, cracked skin on heels and feet?

To avoid dry heels in general, precaution can do a lot. To prevent brittle and dry patches from forming in the first place, you should regularly take a foot bath for about 10 to 20 minutes. This softens the skin and you can carefully remove the callus, i.e. the excess, dead skin cells mechanically with a pumice stone.

You should also give your feet sufficient moisture. Dry your feet carefully after a foot bath or an extensive shower. Afterwards, apply a foot cream that has been specially developed for the care of extremely dry and rough feet.

Also make sure that your shoes fit properly. This will help you avoid pressure points and prevent cornification on the heels. For diabetics in particular, but also for those with excessive callus formation, regular foot care treatment by a podiatrist is also recommended.

Treatment of cracks on the heels and feet

If, despite good care, you develop cracks or chapped heels, it is advisable to treat them specifically. Cracks on the heels are not only unsightly, but can also cause severe pain and in the worst case lead to inflammation. Cracks cause the natural protective cover of the body to be attacked and pathogens such as bacteria or fungal spores can penetrate. If the dry and cracked heels show signs of inflammation, then we recommend that you see a doctor and thus get specialized treatment for the infection.

If there is no inflammation, you can treat the affected area yourself. Since the cornified skin needs a lot of moisture and lipids, we recommend a rich ointment for chapped feet. The optimal time to let this act is during sleep, as our feet are not stressed during the night. Apply a generous amount of cream to the affected areas on your feet before going to bed, then put on a pair of cotton socks if necessary and wear them all night. This will allow the ointment to take full effect. The treatment of chapped feet requires time and patience, often the first successes are visible after 1 to 2 weeks.  After the successful treatment of chapped feet, you should continue to use a special chapping ointment or foot creams containing urea to prevent the formation of new cracks on the heels.

Why do I have dry skin in winter?

Especially in winter, the skin faces new challenges because the climatic changes of the cold season place a particular strain on the skin. For example, the dry heating air and lower humidity lead to more moisture being removed from the skin – the so-called TEWL (“transepidermal water loss”) value increases.

Another factor for dry skin in winter is that the sebaceous glands of the skin are less active at low outdoor temperatures and thus no longer produce sufficient protective skin lipids. At extremely low temperatures, lipid production even stops altogether. Because an essential part of the skin’s protective barrier is lost with the diminished hydrolipidic film, more moisture escapes from the skin. This loss cannot be completely compensated by the skin’s own moisturizing factors.

The result: dry skin in winter. However, this dryness is not only noticeable on the face, but also in form of chapped hands and itchy skin. But how can you combat itchy and dry skin in winter?

What can I do about dry skin in winter?

1st tip against dry skin in winter: Change your care routine in winter

Our skin needs different care routines in winter. If your skin can easily tolerate swimming pools and frequent showers in the summer, it can be quite different in the winter. Even your face cream, which is optimal in summer, can contribute to skin dryness in winter under certain circumstances. Therefore, it is best to start changing your cleansing and care program in the fall before the first problem areas appear.

2nd tip against dry skin in winter: A special skin care

In winter, you should use a care product that provides more moisture than your care product in summer. The best thing to do here is to choose different products that complement each other to protect against dehydration:

For this purpose, it is advantageous if your skin care products contain the proven active ingredient urea (= urea).  Urea is one of the oldest active ingredients in the treatment of dry skin and restores the moisture balance of the skin. By the way, urea has nothing to do with urine; nowadays, the active ingredient is produced in the laboratory. As a natural moisturizing factor, urea penetrates deep into the upper layers of the skin and provides intensive, long-lasting moisture. The active ingredient is able to absorb water, bind it and slowly release it again. In this way, it ensures greater hydration of the skin and regulates its moisture content. This strengthens your skin’s protective barrier and protects it from drying out. In very low outdoor temperatures, it is also recommended to use a care product with a higher lipid content to improve the skin’s protection against cold.

Regular use of care products with urea can counteract dry and itchy skin sustainably and effectively.

External influences can also lead to increased drying of the skin. Long showers or baths, high water temperatures and aggressive cleaning products should be avoided at all costs during the cold season, as these unnecessarily dry out the skin. In addition, the humidity in living rooms should never be below 40%, ideally between 50-60%, even in winter.

The skin microbiome behaves like a complex biological system. As long as the system is in balance, it can protect your skin from external influences. That is why the microbiome is so important for skin health and natural beauty.

What exactly is the skin microbiome?

On the surface of the human skin is the skin microbiome, an ecosystem of almost invisible microorganisms. The skin microbiome is therefore the totality of all these living organisms that reside on the skin. These microorganisms – also called microbes – include bacteria, fungi and also viruses. The skin enters into a symbiosis with the microorganisms, which means living together for mutual benefit.

What are the functions of the skin microbiome?

The skin microbiome is important for your health. It has an important protective function against environmental influences, pathogens and UV light and is thus the living protective shield of your skin! The microbiome also interacts closely with the skin’s immune system and contributes to its normal function.

To ensure an intact protective function, the beneficial microorganisms keep the bad bacteria in check. However, not only the “good” microorganisms are essential. It depends on the right balance of the different microorganisms. Some bacteria and fungi can stimulate the immune system to protective reactions and ward off dangerous germs. At the same time, care should be taken to ensure that the beneficial co-inhabitants do not get out of hand either, as this can otherwise lead to skin problems. In some skin diseases, for example atopic dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis, the altered microbiome contributes to the disease.

How can I support the skin's microbiome?

Fortunately, the skin microbiome is relatively resilient: after cleansing and disinfecting the skin, the microbiome changes only temporarily. However, in order to regenerate quickly, the skin’s microbiome needs an intact protective acid mantle (=hydrolipidic film) on your skin surface. The protective acid mantle consists of water, fat-splitting enzymes, dead cells, sebum and sweat, among other things, and has a slightly acidic average pH value of 5.5. It regulates the water balance of the skin, prevents too much moisture from escaping and also protects against external influences. An intact acid mantle is the basis of life for the skin microbiome.

This healthy balance can be specifically supported by skin cleansing and care products with a pH value of 5.5. The pH skin-neutral formula ensures particularly mild cleansing and care. It does not attack the protective acid mantle of your skin, but helps to stabilize it and in this way protects the skin's microbiome.

Lime water and the skin - the influence of water hardness on our skin

Our skin comes in contact with water every day, whether it is when we wash our hands, take a shower or clean our apartment/home. Water quality and water hardness vary in different countries and regions. Perhaps you have also noticed differences in your skin after taking a shower at home or somewhere else, like on vacation? Sometimes the skin feels dry, it tightens or even starts to flake. Sometimes, however, it feels so good that you can even do without moisturizer. But how does this happen? The answer is: it’s due to the hardness or lime content of the water.

What is lime/hard water?

Lime is formed when calcium and magnesium combine with carbon dioxide dissolved in water. The hardness of water depends on its content of calcium and magnesium ions. If the water contains a lot of lime, i.e. a high content of calcium and magnesium ions, the water is called limy or “hard”. If there are hardly any minerals in the water, it is low in lime or “soft”.

How limy is my water?

You can find out how hard the water in your home is by asking your local water supplier. In Germany, water hardness is measured in °dH (degrees of German hardness). If the value is less than 8.4 °dH, the water is soft and therefore not very calcareous, if the value is between 8.4°dH and 14°dH it is medium hard and if the concentration is above 14°dH it is called hard and therefore calcareous water. Since the hardness of the water due to the lime content has an influence on many kitchen appliances and the effect of detergents (the harder the water the more soap, detergents and cleaning agents are needed), it is useful to know about the water hardness of your own water. In this way, appropriate measures can be taken, such as regular descaling of kettles and coffee machines.

Is limy water unhealthy?

No, quite the opposite. Hard water contains minerals that are essential for building bones, teeth and muscles. Thus, a high lime content in the water is even healthy for the body. But not everything that is healthy for the body from the inside is also good for it from the outside.

Calcification of the blood vessels (arteriosclerosis) has nothing to do with the intake of limy water. Calcified vessels are the consequences of diseases (e.g. diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure), genetic predisposition or lifestyle (e.g. obesity, smoking, high-fat diet, lack of exercise).

What influence does limy water have on the skin?

Due to its high content of minerals, hard water leaves a fine mineral film on the skin, which disrupts the skin barrier function. Due to the disturbed barrier function, the skin loses more moisture. This is the reason for a feeling of tightness on the skin after showering. A strong loss of moisture, for example due to the combination of a genetic skin barrier disorder (atopic dermatitis tendency) and lime-rich water, can lead to skin problems such as eczema and dandruff. Accordingly, limy water can unfortunately have a negative effect on the skin.

What can you do against lime on the skin?

Depending on the hardness of the water, it makes sense either to install a decalcification system in the house or to apply a lime filter attachment directly to the faucet, which filters the minerals directly when the water comes out of the tap. It also helps not to take showers that are too hot and too long. This is because the hotter the water is, the more it dries out the skin. After showering, we also recommend that you apply a nourishing body lotion and face cream directly. No more than 3 minutes should pass between showering and applying the cream. So it is best to apply cream immediately after drying off.

How can you take care of your skin if you already suffer from skin problems?

Whether based on limy water, showering too hot or other reasons: Skin problems such as dryness and flaking nobody likes. However, you can treat this with mild, skin-friendly and caring products. These include products that have a pH value below 6 and contain active ingredients such as urea or panthenol. For particularly sensitive skin, it is also advisable to use fragrance-free care products to avoid further irritation and the development of contact allergies.

What is Keratosis pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris or also known as strawberry skin on the arm is a non-contagious cornification disorder of the skin. In technical terminology, this is called keratosis pilaris. This is noticeable by small, often red pimples on the skin, because the openings of the hair follicles in the skin are blocked due to increased or false keratin production – a substance essential for hair, nails and skin. With a suitable care routine, such as frequent application of a urea and salicylic/fruit acid body lotion, the symptoms can be alleviated. This binds moisture in the skin, supports the desquamation of dead skin cells and makes the skin smoother and more supple.

Symptoms of Keratosis pilaris

The first symptoms of keratosis pilaris usually become apparent in childhood, more than half of all children and adolescents suffer from it.  The symptoms are more noticeable during puberty while improvement can be seen with increasing age.Keratosis pilaris is mostly located on the (upper) arms, thighs, and buttocks. Small white or red pimples – comparable to “goose bumps” – indicate the cornification disorder.

Some people also describe it as “strawberry skin” on the arm or pimples on the inner thigh. Although the pinhead-sized elevations usually do not cause itching or pain, they are perceived as very disturbing cosmetically by those affected. If itching occurs (e.g. in patients with atopic eczema), frequent and intensive scratching can, however, lead to inflammation.

Causes of Keratosis pilaris

The exact causes of keratosis pilaris have not been conclusively determined. However, since a family connection can be established, a genetic cause is highly probable.

As current research indicates, keratosis pilaris develops due to incorrect keratin production and maybe over-production of keratin in the hair follicles. Another factor might be abnormal growth of hairs. Altogether, these conditions result in accumulation of keratin in the follicle openings. The hair follicle opening becomes blocked and the outer layer of skin thickens and rises. As a result, pimple-like elevations appear.

Since dry skin also contributes to the occurrence and aggravation of skin irritations, it is important to consider external factors in this situation, such as the weather during the change of seasons. For this reason, keratosis pilaris often worsens in the winter. This is due to increased moisture loss from the skin and decreased sebaceous gland activity caused by low humidity. Therefore, in winter keratotis pilaris might lead to inflammation of the skin, called eczema. To avoid this aggravation it is necessary to use good moisturizers in the affected areas during winter time.

Keratosis Pilaris on the Face

Keratosis Pilaris can potentially affect the face. In this case, we speak of subgroups of keratosis pilaris or certain variants. Depending on the subtype of keratosis pilaris, the rough papules on a reddish background may appear especially  on the cheeks.

Treatment of Keratosis pilaris

Unfortunately, there is no complete cure for keratosis pilaris. However, a suitable skin care routine and creams can alleviate it. The first prerequisite for successfully combating the hyperkeratotic skin areas is thorough skin care. If the skin is only slightly affected, the regular use of moisturizing skin lotions promises lasting improvement.

Skin lotions with urea are particularly suitable for daily skin care. Urea binds moisture in the skin and counteracts chafed skin.
